UI/ UX Design

What is UI Design?

The UI is the face of your website - the look and feel. The main purpose of a good UI is to make the customer’s interaction with your website or mobile app smooth and usable. Hence, it is important to consider every visual and interactive element of your website or mobile app that the user might come across. A good UI design makes sure the design is consistent and aesthetically pleasing.

What is UX Design?

UX Design is the process a design team uses to make the UI user friendly. UX involves the usability and functioning of your app. Having said that, UX designers don’t just focus on the usability of the product but also concentrate on aspects of user experience, efficiency and fun too. When we say user experience, there is no real definition to it. A good user experience is one that meets the user’s need while using a particular product.

Both the UI and UX designers need to understand the Why, What and How of a product.

  • Why - the reason people accept a product or use a product.
  • What - what the users can do with the product, mainly its functionality.
  • How - the development of functionality in an aesthetically pleasing and accessible way.

Click Through Prototypes/ Wireframes

Wireframes are like the basic structure of the project to be worked on. It explains how a website or a mobile application will look like in terms of layout, navigation, content placement, etc. The wireframes show what the website or mobile application functionality will turn out to be.

The benefits of wireframing are obvious and we are listing some below:

  • It is time and cost-effective: This is the best way to create a concept of what you want to create and get feedback from potential users and clients. A visual representation is always better than texts.
  • Improved communication: Making wireframes helps improve the communication within the team and keep the process of development transparent from the beginning. Feedback from the client also helps the developer’s team get a better insight into the project.
  • Teamwork: From a designer to a developer and a coder, everyone has an understanding of the basic function of an App and the suggestions from all perspectives can be considered while in the wireframing stage making the wireframes complete and precise.
  • Problem diagnosis in the early stage: All the problem areas can be diagnosed at a very early stage and all the fixes can be done before proceeding further to the designing and coding stage.
  • Easy and Quick: A wireframe is very easy and quick to produce and requires minimum effort to be accomplished.

User Journeys

A user journey is like a map of user action that describes the relationship between a brand and its customers. It is a visual representation of interactions between users and products from different platforms and different points of view.

User journey mapping is a process where a timeline of all touchpoints between a customer and an organization is created. This helps a company understand how users experience their products based on their motivation and goals which can differ from user to user. Mapping out a user’s experience allows us to understand several factors that form an overall impression of a product.

Journey maps are a common UX tool. The map should have a detail-rich timeline that shows the most important sub-tasks and events.

The map should consist of:

  • A timescale: A defined period of the journey for example; 2 weeks. It should also include areas from awareness to conversions.
  • Scenarios: The sequence of events or situations in which the user must achieve his/her goals.
  • Touchpoints: What a consumer does while interacting and how he does it is the touchpoints to be covered
  • Channels: The channel where the actions by the users are performed, for example; Facebook or Instagram
  • Thoughts and feelings: The thought process and the feelings of a customer.

This way a user journey map helps discover possible problem areas and improve the design to make the user’s experience improve at all touchpoints.

Usability Testing

Usability testing is a testing technique to measure how easily a system can be used by an end user. It is a non-functional testing technique and is often also called as User Testing. The word "usability" also refers to methods for improving ease-of-use during the design process.

The word Usability defines 5 components:

  • Learnability
  • Efficiency
  • Memorability
  • Errors
  • Satisfaction

Why is Usability Testing Important?

If an App or a website is difficult to use, people will leave and not want to use it again. It is therefore important that a user should easily be able to find what they are looking for.

There are many ways to study and improve the usability and the goals of usability testing usually include:

  • Identifying problems in the design of the product or service
  • Uncovering opportunities to improve
  • Learning about the target user’s behavior and preferences
  • To avoid encountering usability issues and bugs later
  • To have a functional and efficient experience

This type of research is extremely important for a new product or new design because without this step, the internal team members may understand the design process but a customer or a new user will not.

What are the benefits of Usability Testing?

  • Helps validate your prototype
  • Confirm your product meets expectations
  • Learning about the target user’s behavior and preferences
  • Helps identify issues with complex flows
  • Helps identify minor issues
  • Provides a better users experience
